Med High Blood Drive
On Friday 6th December the Med High Annual Blood Drive will take place between 11:00am – 1:00pm.
Many of you may question why you should give blood and where indeed the blood goes to – after all its not the most pleasant way to spend your morning! Melodramatic as it sounds, your donation of blood can quite simply contribute to saving a life.
Firstly, many people may lose a significant amount of blood due to trauma such as in an accident or during child birth which can be life threatening. Blood is also separated into red blood cells, platelets and plasma which can be used for the treatment of patients with different blood disorders such as anaemia. However, what few people know is that a large proportion of blood is needed for oncology/cancer wards as many chemotherapies destroy different components of blood and many patients need blood transfusions on a regular basis. It is sadly a common occurrence for cancer patients in Cyprus to wait for hours or even days for blood in order to be allowed to go home and spend some precious hours with their loved ones.
So yes giving blood may not be a pleasant experience but not having blood when you or a loved one needs it can be devastating.
